How to Prepare for Your Baby Casting Session

Complete preparation guide for your casting appointment. What to bring, what to expect, and how to ensure the best results.

Preparing for Your Casting Session

Proper preparation ensures a smooth, successful casting session. Here's everything you need to know to get ready.

What to Bring

  • Your baby! (of course)
  • Extra nappies and wipes: Just in case
  • Feeding supplies: If your baby is bottle-fed, bring formula and bottles
  • Comfort items: Favorite toy or blanket to help keep baby calm
  • Change of clothes: For both baby and yourself (just in case)

What Your Baby Should Wear

To make the process easier:

  • Loose-fitting clothes: That can easily be rolled up
  • Separate tops and bottoms: Rather than all-in-ones
  • Easy-access sleeves: For hand castings
  • Easy-access feet: Socks that can be easily removed

We always make sure parents' clothing is well protected, and the process is generally mess-free, but it's good to be prepared.

Timing Your Session

Best times:

  • After a feed, when baby is content and sleepy
  • During usual nap time
  • When baby is typically calm and relaxed

Avoid:

  • Right before feeding time (hungry babies are less cooperative)
  • When baby is unwell or teething
  • During times when baby is typically fussy

What to Expect

Session duration: We typically allow an hour for the casting session, though it can often be completed more quickly.

The process:

  1. We'll discuss your preferences (frame choices, finishes, etc.)
  2. We'll prepare the alginate (impression powder)
  3. We'll take the mold (this takes just a couple of minutes)
  4. We'll clean up (the process is relatively mess-free)

Tips for Success

  • Feed baby beforehand: A well-fed baby is a happy, cooperative baby
  • Bring a helper: If possible, bring a partner or family member to help keep baby calm
  • Stay relaxed: Babies pick up on your energy - staying calm helps keep them calm
  • Be patient: We work at your baby's pace and take breaks as needed

Frame and Finish Selection

During your session, we'll discuss:

  • Frame color and style options
  • Finish choice (silver, bronze, or gold)
  • Personalization options (name plates, photos)
  • Frame size options

After the Session

Once the molds are taken:

  • We'll take the molds away to create your castings
  • Your finished castings will be ready within approximately 4 weeks
  • We'll contact you when they're ready for collection or delivery
